10 great spots within 10 minutes of Woodend

One of the joys of living in Woodend is that so many good things are close by. Here are ten local favourites we think are worth discovering.

1. Woodend Beach

Wild, rugged and refreshingly uncrowded. Whether you're into surfing, fishing, walking the dog or simply watching the waves roll in, Woodend Beach is one of the area's biggest drawcards.

2. The Mill, Waikuku

Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, The Mill is well worth the short drive north for its superb coffee and relaxed country charm. Once caffeinated, browse the changing selection of art and giftware on hand.

3. Brew Moon Brewing Company

Tucked away in Amberley (15 minutes away, but worth the drive), Brew Moon has been serving handcrafted beer and pub-style meals for more than 20 years. Even if craft beer isn't your thing, you'll find plenty to enjoy here.

4. Tuhaitara Coastal Park

Stretching between the coast and State Highway 1, this remarkable reserve offers walking and cycling trails through dunes, wetlands and native planting. A hidden gem for nature lovers.

5. Tutaepatu Trail

Linking Waikuku and Kaiapoi, the 10km-long Tutaepatu Trail passes through wetlands and alongside the Tutaepatu Lagoon, an important traditional mahinga kai (food-gathering place). Flat and well maintained, it's ideal for walking, trail running or an easy family bike ride.

6. Woodend Bakery

Every town needs a good bakery, and Woodend's is no exception. Perfect for grabbing a pie before heading to the beach or fuelling up before a weekend adventure.

7. Ravenswood Central

Just minutes away, Ravenswood has quickly become a handy hub for everyday essentials, dining and shopping. Convenient when you need it, without the bustle of a larger centre.

8. Toppings Woodfired Pizza

A local favourite for good reason. Grab a takeaway and head for the beach, or settle in and enjoy one of the best pizzas in the district.

9. Kaiapoi River Walks

The riverside trails around Kaiapoi provide a different perspective on North Canterbury. Ideal for a morning stroll, bike ride or a peaceful hour outdoors.

10. Woodend Beach Takeaways

Sometimes the simplest pleasures are the best. Grab a couple of scoops, hotdogs and fish, then head down to the beach to watch the sun go down. Life doesn’t get much better than this.
