North Canterbury adventures from your doorstep
29.06.2026
One of the perks of living in Woodend is having some of Canterbury's best attractions right up the road.
Woodend: Your gateway to North Canterbury
Living in Woodend comes with a surprising bonus.
Head south and you're in Christchurch in under half an hour. Head north and a whole new side of Canterbury opens up.
From wineries and scenic railway journeys to empty beaches and alpine escapes, some of the region's best experiences are right on your doorstep.
Here are a few worth adding to the list.
Waipara wine country
Less than half an hour from Woodend, Waipara is home to some of New Zealand's most celebrated wineries. Whether you're stopping in for lunch, enjoying a cellar door tasting or simply soaking up the scenery, it's an easy day out that never gets old.
The North Canterbury Wine & Food Festival
Held annually in Waipara, this much-loved event combines local wine, food, music and sunshine in one of the country's most picturesque settings. A perfect excuse to gather a group of friends and make a day of it.
The Weka Pass Railway
Step back in time aboard this beautifully restored heritage railway. Running between Glenmark and Waikari, the journey winds through limestone country and offers a uniquely North Canterbury experience for all ages.
Frog Rock
One of those wonderfully quirky roadside attractions that has become a local landmark. Located near Greta Valley, Frog Rock makes a great photo stop on the way north and a fun talking point for younger travellers.
Hanmer Springs
Fancy a bigger adventure? Hanmer Springs is close enough for a day trip and offers everything from forest walks and mountain biking to the famous thermal pools. It's one of Canterbury's most popular destinations for good reason.
One of the things we love about Woodend is its position between coast, countryside and city. That's why we were so excited when the opportunity arose to create Beaconsfield. We saw the chance to shape a new neighbourhood in one of Canterbury's most underrated locations, giving people a place to call home that’s just where they want to be.
